The Oscars 2015 – A Review of the Red Carpet

This year The Academy Awards, a.k.a. the Superbowl of award shows, went out not with a bang, but more of slight whisper. Perhaps it had something to do with Reese Whitherspoon’s public proclamation that “We are more than just our dresses!” , or maybe because for the most part the winners were fairly predictable, whatever it was the red carpet, and the awards show itself, just seemed to be lacking that certain something.  Not lacking was the amount of  popcorn and champagne I consumed. I attended a “Pajamas and Pearls” red carpet viewing party with some fabulous ladies. We ate tons of good food while hanging out  in our best bling and our most comfortable pjs!

While I do agree that actresses, and women in general, should be celebrated for what is inside their brain more than what’s on their bodies, I also love to look at beautiful dresses. So the show must go on! Time for my recap and review….

Best in Blush

This pale hue was super popular this year but I have to give this category to Gwyneth, love her or hate her, but you can always count on her to bring it to the red carpet.

Best in Black and White

I’m giving this award to Meryl, not like she needs another award. Here is an example of an actress who has always said fashion is not “her thing”, yet I feel like she always looks appropriate and dressed well. Reese, you let me down. You can be a great actress and wear an amazing dress. This was good but I know you can do better. Julianne’s hair finally got the elegant updo I have been begging for. I liked the dress but I didn’t love it. I kept wanting to move that band of flowers off of her hips and center it on her waistline.

Best in Beading

This was close but I am going with Emma Stone. Although I would have liked a small kind of belt (black thin velvet?) to define her waist I was blown away but the beautiful detail on this dress. Her hair and makeup were pure perfection.

Best in Boob

I know I keep saying this but J.Lo put away the boobs! We know you have them, we know they are fantastic but you just sported your golden globes at last months Golden Globes awards. And if you don’t have any boobs (I’m looking at you Miss Duvall) why are we drawing attention to it? Both of these women are so very beautiful and these abyss deep v-cuts are taking away from their gowns and their gorgeous faces. Chrissy, you are the winner by default, although this dress to me feels more Grammys than Oscars. I think a good general rule, especially at an awards show known for its serious demeanor, is if you are flashing skin in one area than tone it down in the other. If Chrissy’s slit was a longer I think she would have looked much more sophisticated. She’s hot, we know it, she’s in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit issue. We don’t need to see her try so hard to remind us.

Best in Bling

The usually parade of Harry Winston diamonds was passed over this year for some funkier statement pieces. ScarJo, this was not a good choice. It hurts my eyes and I am confused. I have to award a tie in this category as both ladies chose unusual pieces and colors (love the tassel! love the turquoise!) and turned their black dresses into anything but basic.

Best in Blazingly Hot Couples

Really? These couples are all just so perfectly perfect I can’t even discuss it any further.

Best in Body

This ladies all went with bold color and simple shapes that hugged their gorgeous curves. But Rosamund Pike wins this category for me as this dress, and the matching shoes, fit her like a glove. I would hug this dress if I could because I love it that much.

Best in Breathtaking

These are the dresses that made me choke on my popcorn as I tried to scream. Rita Ora brought the old Hollywood, classic drama that I was waiting for. Her custom-made Marchesa was sophisticated and stunning. Naomi’s dress brought interest and a shape I hadn’t seen, with the back and side cutouts showcasing a sequin bandeau. It was risky but it worked. But Lupita! Those pearls!! Thousands!  Six thousand to be exact, and yes I looked that up. This dress was completely original and really only could look so perfect on Lupita herself. It feels like what would happen if King Neptune instructed a fashionable group of mermaids to create a gown. It was exquisite!

Hopefully I kept your attention more than the Oscar’s kept mine. Did you have a favorite? Did you like the show? Were also uncomfortable when Neil Patrick Harris came out in his underwear?

*Insider Tip – Know Your Audience

I am a huge proponent of expressing yourself through your clothing. That being said I also think it is extremely important to be respectful of where you are going and who is going to be there. Our son is in full on windpants mode all the time. He finds it easier to slide around the floor as he plays hockey…indoors…in our kitchen. However when we go to church or to dinner with grandparents, a country club or nice event he knows he will be forced to put on nice pants (not jeans ) and a nice pair of shoes (not sneakers). We enforce this with him because I think it is important for him to understand that sometimes his outfit isn’t about him. Sometimes it’s about showing a form of respect to who you are going to be with or to where you are going to be going. Red carpet type of events are similar. Recently I was asked to contribute to an article in The News Journal, “What Kind of Awards Show Gal Are You?”  Make sure to check it out on Delaware Online to see which show would best fit your style statement!
