Summer Shoes

Here are the top 5 summer shoe style you need to have in your closet!

1. The Neutral Wedge

Can be dressed up or down and goes with everything from shorts and t-shirt to a sundress. Wear everywhere from a backyard barbecue, to a wedding on the beach.

My pick:

Isola Orenda

The Nassau Wedge , available at  Ashley Austin Boutique. I have these in the sand color. I went back and got them in black. I LOVE them AND they are comfortable!

 2. The Flip Flop

I know these are not very supportive for your feet but everyone needs a go to summer flip-flop that you can throw on for the pool, beach or just anytime you wish you really could be barefoot. Consider this like the sweatpants of shoes. They don’t always make your feet or your legs look good but they are so comfortable you know you are going to wear them.

My Pick:

Yoga Joy Metallic

The Sanuk line of sandals. They are made from yoga mats and feel very zen on your feet.

3. The Casual Shoe

Baseball games, amusement parks and fairs are all summertime staples. A casual classic sneaker (think Keds, Converse or even the Sperry Top Sider for the beach) is your go to when you want to be able to hop on bicycle and go.

My pick:

J.Crew - Sperry Top-Sider® for J.Crew Authentic Original 2-eye metallic boat shoes

The Sperry Top-Sider boat shoe. It’s a classic and it is super comfortable. I recently picked up a pair of a client who wasn’t sure if she would keep them. One month later and she said she is living in them because they go with everything.

 4. The Summer Flat

Let’s face it. Our pedi isn’t always pretty. Sometimes there is just no time and you still need to feel pulled together at work or for an event. A dressy pointy toe flat is the perfect answer to hide a bad toe day.

My pick:

Fish Kid Flat

This two-toned two-textured pointy toe flat, available at Ashley Austin Boutique. The front is a gray scale skin and the back is white patent. I have these and I want to wear them even when my toes are suitable for show.

5. The Statement Shoe

This is the fun shoe. The one you break out for nights out with the girls or to spruce up a date night jeans and t. This is the one you know you aren’t walking around for miles in but you want everyone to see it when you do. It could be a sexy stiletto or a sparkled sandal, as long as it screams “Fabulous!”

My pick (s):

Steve Madden Maiden | Piperlime

It’s bright. It’s blue. It’s bold. It’s perfect. From Steve Madden.

 And…

Diamant Sandals - anthropologie.com

So delicate. So pretty. Your girlfriends will swoon. By Jeffrey Campbell.

*Insider Tip – Bins for the Basics

Don’t waste space on trying to organize flimsy or thin thong sandals and flip-flops. Corral them into a bin to stay organized. I actually keep one of these upstairs and one of these downstairs for the whole family to throw flip-flops and our “throw own” type shoes. Perfect for running out the door when the whole family decides to go grab ice cream.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a gallbladder.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a gallbladder.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a gallbladder.

Do you know what your gallbladder does? Neither did I until a few weeks ago. I was hit with what can only be described as labor type contraction pains in my upper abdomen and ended up in the ER.  For whatever reason my gallbladder has gone kaput so it’s coming out on Tuesday. I feel fortunate there is nothing more serious wrong but none the less I am not looking forward to be being down and out for a few days. In the interim I have a hodge podge of updates from this past week.

#1. Shop Till You Drop

Shopaholics is an annual event at The Princeton Bar and The Whitebrier Restuarant in Avalon New Jersey. It’s the Olympics of shopping and trust me when I tell you I have trained for this all year. With over 30 vendors offering merchandise at 70% off this is a fantasy come to life for me. I was, however, on my best behavior and kept my purchases focused. After a couple of glasses of wine it is easy enough to convince yourself, and everyone around you, that you need to purchase 10 pairs of shoes.  I did buy the perfect pair of warm weather wedges ( perfect for our upcoming trip to Florida) by Toms.

toms

Who knew they made these cute heels?? They were $30  and they will match 75% of my spring and summer wardrobe. My red Toms flats were my saving grace during last year’s field trip fiasco.

IMG_2324
My good friend Erin, who was brave enough to shop the chaos with me.IMG_2330

IMG_2325 IMG_2327 IMG_2328

#2. Leopard Love

When it is the Olympics of shopping you need to show up in a competitive uniform. The sock bun is the perfect cute updo to keep my hair out of my face so I can stay focused. Comfy shoes and a hands free bag? Check and check courtesy of a Friday trip to Ashley Austin’s in Kennett Square.  Ashley and Lauren helped me pick out this perfect studded chain handbag (which easily coverts to a clutch with a quick detach of the chain!) and these to die for loafers. Navy leopard whaaaaat??? These are so cute for spring with denim skinnies . Perfect for navigating the major sales of shopaholics!

IMG_1474 IMG_1475 IMG_1476

#3. CAbi Fever

Some of you may know that I also work as a show assistant to Patty Quercetti, a consultant for the CAbi line of clothing. If you have never attended a show you are missing out. If you host a show Patty brings the collection right into your own home where I help her to set up and have a mini fashion show. You can eat, drink and shop with your girlfriends. So fun! I worked a show with Patty last week and below are some of my favorite looks from the Spring/Summer collection.

*Insider Tip –

I know it feels early but start your spring and summer shopping NOW. The fashion industry calendar does not work like our calendar. Stores get some of the best of the warm weather collection now through March. Take the time now to go through last year’s summer clothing. Edit out any outdated t-shirts, especially the whites. If you are like me I put them away just fine and when I bring them back out it looks like a cat has urinated in the underarms. I don’t have a cat and I do wear antiperspirant so I don’t know what happens. Also take out anything that may need alterations if your size has changed and march over to a tailor. And of course take out anything you know you don’t like or just won’t wear anymore. Consignment stores are already accepting spring and summer inventory. Make sure to take a note of what you are discarding and make a list of any new pieces you may need. It will help you to keep a focused shopping list that you can get started on ASAP.   I cannot wait until warmer weather and I am obsessed with this perfect outfit below.

Here in the Northeast corridor of the country we are just coming up for air from Hurricane Sandy. Thankfully, the damages where we live were minimal but my heart goes out to those who suffered much worse. We did lose power, but only a little bit. Some local places were open so I was able to get out and get coffee this morning. This is good because it meant I did not kill anyone in my home due to lack of being caffeinated.

image via nomoredirtylooks.com

There was almost a trip to the ER in our house yesterday as I was convinced I was going to have a heart attack. The anxiety that goes along with what could happen and the waiting nearly killed me. I am not one of those people who acts calm, cool and collected. I am anxious, antsy and annoying to all of those around me. And even worse I tend to freeze in the face of fear, acting like a deer in headlights, waiting for the grown up in the room to come take care of it all, only to find out that is supposed to be me. Thank goodness for my hubby.

Sadly but true to form the one area I was prepared in was in my wardrobe. I felt very capable to brave the elements this morning because I was wearing my grown-up rain boots. Just like the L.B.J. I think they are something every woman needs to have in their wardrobe. I have recommended them to almost all my clients, including a teenager I was helping to pack up for college, to a recent retiree whose lifestyle has just changed. When I say rain boots I think most people conjure up grotesque images in their mind like…

or

image via ebay.com

To me, the examples above are what I consider Galoshes aka Rubbers, and are not a cute look. Thankfully we have come a long way baby. Todays options are stylish and stunning. And faced with storms that can strike 4/4 seasons they are one of the most used pairs of shoes in my wardrobe. Sometimes when I wear my Hunter tall black gloss boots people will say stupid things like “Hey Noah! Where’s your ark?” But guess what? I don’t care. I am comfortable and dry while I go about my day, despite blowing rains and big puddles in parking lots.

And the very best part? They allow me to walk our battered but still beautiful beaches, even in the dead of winter, and kick my feet through the water. That makes me very, very happy.

Since many of us are busy this week getting back to life after Sandy this post will be mostly visual, with some pics from Pinterest that I think are smashing. Some are practical, some are not (grosgrain ribbons on a rain boot? not completely practical but oh so cute!). Enjoy!

*Insider Tip – As I have said before, try to buy the best QUALITY that you can afford. This does not mean the most expensive ones but the ones that, considering what you have paid, you will get equal payback in performance. My Hunter boots are worth every cent, considering how many times I have worn them over the last 2 years. Before that I had purchased an inexpensive pair that leaked and hurt my feet. Not worth it.

*Insider Tip – Vertically challenged and hate the look/feel of a too-tall boot? You have options!

*Insider Tip – I am adding this as an update in response to a couple of reader comments that brought up a great point!

Okay- I have BIG calves- are the Hunter boots REALLY wide? Because the cheap rain boots from Target are too tight on my calves.

Me too there where you got the big calves I need something easy to put on

GREAT QUESTION! I should have mentioned that Hunter makes a style of boots called The Huntress – described on their website as “The Huntress boot encompasses the style of the classic Hunter Original, but with a wider calf space and a shorter shaft height. Perfect for those seeking a roomier fit.” I have read reviews on this boot and talked to some clients and all are happy with the fit!

These Boots Were Made For Walking – Ashley’s top picks from Ashley Austin Boutique

These Boots Were Made For Walking – Ashley’s top picks from Ashley Austin Boutique

Go grab a coffee. Or a cocktail. This post is about shoes and there is no way it is going to be short. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Imagine you are having the perfect dream. It’s about shoes, tons of shoes. And they are displayed like works of art in a museum.

And all of your girlfriends are hanging out in the museum laughing, chatting, and having a blast. There is wine. And there are cupcakes. This is exactly what it is like to step into the Ashley Austin Boutique in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

Pinned Image
Hey, it’s my dream and if I want a tub made to look like a high heel I can have it.
image via pinterest

To start the place is beautiful. And everyone that works there is beautiful. You almost want to dislike them because it all seems too perfect but you can’t. They are nice, super nice. And funny. And magically you feel beautiful, funny, smart and nice when you are there. It is like a magical dust that sprinkles over you as soon as you step through the door.

I used to feel awkward going into smaller boutique type stores. I always felt like I had to buy something so it didn’t look rude. Kind of like going into someone’s home and you feel you have to find something nice to say. Even if it is a hoarders trailer on the edge of a swamp I feel compelled to find something, anything, nice to say.”Wow, I love the pretty home sweet home sign you have spelled out with cigarette ashes on your table!” But I promise you Ashley Austin is not that kind of place. (That you feel like you have to say something nice OR that you feel like you have to buy something – trust me you will want to do both!) There is no pressure ever to buy but I dare you to leave without anything.

Funny Cry for Help Ecard: 'Ugh I can't believe I have to go out and buy a new pair of shoes!' ...said no woman ever.

I stopped in the other day to see what Ashley had handpicked for the Fall season. Each and every shoe is picked out by Ashley and reflects her taste for something that is wearable and unique. These are not the shoes that you will see on everyone else everywhere you go, so be prepared for some serious shoe envy when you are out and about. I couldn’t wait to get Ashley’s input on what she considered must-haves for Fall.

Up first, THE Hunter Wellie.

I bought mine a couple of years back and they are the best. And trust me, I tried to buy the cheapie version rainboot but it was uncomfortable and fell apart. These boots last and are sooooo comfortable. The very best part? Purchase the sock insert as an add on and Voilà!, now you have a snow boot.

Next, the Bootie. Not to be confused with the Booty.

The Booty, courtesy of my most adorable nephew Mason.
The Bootie, courtesy of Ashley Austin.

This shoe is perfect with just about everything. Have you seen pics of Katie Holmes rocking hers all over NYC? They are perfect for on the go because they are totally comfortable on your feet, and, they give you just enough height so that your jeans are dragging on the ground. Perfect for walking away from ex-husbands and Scientology.

image via fabsugar.com

Also a must have for boots? The Frye boot.

This classic company has been making boots since the late 1800s. Originally made as a classic harness workboot they now range to all different heights, colors, and even sleek styles. I purchased my first pair last year and you will have to pry them out of my cold, dead hands because I will have them forever.

I think I’ll take both….

Smoking loafers aka smoking slippers.

If there was a current “it” shoe for the season it would be these flats. Pretty AND comfortable, and in a leopard print they are too cute for words. And your feet will thank you.

Don’t forget the extras…

Bags.

And more bags!

Ah-May-Zing scarves, jewelry, perfume, candles….

I grabbed this before I left.

It is reversible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love that!!!!

And I desperately want these but cannot settle on colors – too many good choices. If I was less selfish they would make a fabulous personalized gift.

Did I mention they get new deliveries almost every day? They were just unpacking these cuties before I left.

*Insider Tip – Take care of your shoes. It is a small price to pay if you invest in the proper care product up front. Condition your shoes and protect them at the beginning and middle of each season, and in a perfect world before you put them away at the end of the season as well. You will be so happy you did when your small child spills milk on them. I am speaking from experience. Frye has a wonderful treatment sold right at Ashley Austin.

*Insider Tip – Store your tall boots properly. Again, given unlimited resources a true boot tree insert is wonderful.

Under my normal person circumstances you can use an empty wine bottle (they magically appear in our house….), an extra-large water bottle, a “swim noodle”, and rolled up magazines (the large Fall Fashion issue size).
