The Emmy Awards September 2024

There were a lot of specific trends at this year’s show and some worked and some fell flat. Overall I’d give the looks a B as nothing was completely jaw dropping. Even the not-so-good looks were not as awful as previous years. One noticeable difference from years past? There was a lot of coverage as far as the dresses. Most of all the women had their bits and pieces covered up almost conservatively, and we really didn’t see the whole cut-out thing from the past couple seasons. There wasn’t a ton of color and I kinda wish there would have been. Jewelry was also very understated and everyone seemed to go very natural with their hair loose and long. So lets breakdown the trends and pick out the best.

Also if you are wondering why we had 2 Emmy Award shows in 2024 that’s because the one from January was shown late due to the writers strike. So September is the usually time but when they missed the 2023 in September they ended up having it in January. Want to read that recap? Click HERE.

Black and White

These all felt just okay to me. I don’t really dislike them but I’m not wowed by them. However Viola’s arms? That’s a wow.

Pale Pink

Well this is a little awkward. Both Eliza and Rita are wearing the same color from the same Fall Fashion 2024 line from designer Tamara Ralph. Eliza’s dress was actually all sequins and the texture against the feathers looked really beautiful on camera. The close-up interviews with her really showed off her stunning complexion and the most perfect blow-out I have seen. Rita’s was more of a satin which I didn’t love as much. Diane Lane is lovely and this dress is beautiful but the color doesn’t really compliment her skin.

Metallics

I love the sleek bob on Kristen Wiig but this dress reminds me too much of those woven paper or bamboo toys that you stick your fingers in and then they get stuck. Why that exists as a toy I have no idea but I feel like they were always located at child eye level near a register. Gillian Anderson’s textured silver is a little better but it kinda feels like Tim Gunn gave the designers a roll of silver reflective insulation and told them to “Make it work.” I do think Ella Purnell’s look was a clear winner. It has total Michelle Pfeiffer’s Scarface vibes and that dark lip really stood out and worked with her nails and hair. Also loving the shoes and the jewelry. Very 70s chic and I loved it.

Classic Black

It’s September so the black doesn’t feel too heavy to me but I just feel bored. Connie’s hair was distracting on the screen because it just looked a little too bed head for a red carpet. Mindy’s dress is pretty in a Sofia-Vergara-would-wear-this type of way but it just feels so dark with the dark lip and dark hair. Elizabeth has beautiful skin, like a porcelain doll, but again the dress was just boring and the jewelry didn’t add enough interest for me.

Champagne

It is a little hard to tell in these photos but the detail on these dresses in close-ups on television was stunning. I loved the effortless look of Dakota with this beautiful pearl gown but her fly-away hair was maybe a little too effortless. Everyone loves Jenn and I do too but I feel like this is a look we have seen on her so many other times. Clearly it is her style to go for a cleaner look – no necklace probably because the dress is so embellished, but I was craving something a little different (see my ideas below). Catherine O’Hara was a knockout in this dress. Flawless fit, perfect accessories and the pale shade just worked with her hair and skin. She looked amazing.

Liquid Looks

I’m not a fan of this shiny material. Quinta is a really tiny person and I feel like this dress is like an oil slick swallowing her whole. And this red look on Nava Mau reminds me way too much of a fruit roll-up in the strawberry flavor.

Least Favorites

To be fair these aren’t totally horrible but none of them do anything good for these talented actresses. Maya’s dress is not a flattering color on her and the drapey polyester feels like bad curtains. Reese is gorgeous but this dress just feels old on her, like a Jessica McClintock prom dress. The necklace is short and kind of cuts her off and her makeup felt really pale. The severe up-do also just felt like it was aging on her. There are a lot of ways a woman can pull of the formal suit look but this isn’t it for me. I feel like the light pink is too light for a suit and it drives me crazy when it looks like they didn’t have their pants tailored and they are stepping on the hem.

Most Favorite

This is what a really well-tailored dress looks like. These are gowns but these women are wearing the heck out of them as opposed to when the dress takes over the wearer. The simple center parts look sleek and clean and are a nice balance to the dresses. Jewelry was subtle and complimentary, letting the gowns do all the heaving lifting. These were absolutely my top 2 favorites for the night.

Changing it up…

I feel like this is a classic Sofia Vegara look and while of course she looks great, I would like to see her in something different. Her work on the Griselda series would have been the perfect opportunity to put her in something a little more sophisticated and slightly stronger of a look.

So Brie Larson looked great in this Chanel tea-length dress and it was a nice nod to her Lessons in Chemistry character. But I would have loved to see a dress like this on Reese. I think it still has that cute factor that we usually see on Reese but I don’t think we see her in navy often and rarely in Chanel. I think even her updo would have worked better with this style dress.

So even though I’m sure she is a top pick for best dressed for many people I think it would just be interesting to see Jenn in something a little different then her normal look. The first dress has a sexy sheer look that was actually worn by Naomi Watts to the after-party. I know Jenn has worn a lot of black but I think this sheer look would be a little edgier for her. I also think it would be fun to see her in something with some color and maybe a little boho inspired. This orange silk dress was worn by Juno Temple and is vintage Roberto Cavalli. I think this would be an interesting departure for Jenn to go with this color and wear vintage.

So what did you think? Did you watch the whole show? I did not make it up for the whole show and truthfully I hadn’t see a lot of the big winners (Shogun, The Bear). I did think that father-son Eugene and Dan Levy were a fun match to host the program and they did a great job. Let me know in the comments if you had a favorite look!
