I think the Golden Globes should start giving out awards for Reality Shows and their cast members. I mean, let’s be honest, we know this isn’t all “real” which means that these people are pretty good actors. Plus, these are the majority of shows that I like to rot my brain at when I watch tv at night, which means I have never seen most of the shows and movies that won awards last night. While it sounds like Shogun is a really good show, I’m just too lazy to read subtitles at night, especially when I am multitasking and aimlessly scrolling through my phone while I’m watching tv. While I may not know all of the actors I am posting about today, I do pay highly focused attention to the red carpet, like I’m not even on my cell phone. I take pages of notes the old fashioned way on a legal pad with a pencil. This year my extremely judgy corgi, Lady Grace, watched along with me and weighed in on my observations.

So let’s start with the host, Nicki Glaser. If you have even seen her do a roast on comedy central then you know this girl knows how to hold her own. I think she kept what can be an extremely awkward at times show (why we the cameras so tightly zoomed in on the presenters?!?) running smoothly and it felt fun. Her jokes were edgy but not cruel, and, the best part about having a female host is the outfit changes. From the red carpet all the way through, the fit and color of her dresses was on point.

There wasn’t a lot of color as far as dresses go but a few shades were trending.
Gold Rush

While I think all these ladies looked lovely I think Mindy Kaling had the best fit. On television the texture of the crystals on top of the sequins made for a double layer of glamour. One of my favorite looks of the night for sure.
Navy

So these looks are pretty but I’m not wowed. Kate Hudson’s dress is beautiful but I just didn’t feel it looked like her (more on that later). Justine in the middle looked very pretty but the broach on the waistline put this dress in very clear mother-of-the-bride territory for me, which would be lovely for a wedding but not for someone who isn’t really old enough to have a bride age daughter. And I love Allison Janey but I do not like those shoulder to arm drape things. I would have liked it better as a simple classic halter, without the necklace or the side draping.
Winter White

I don’t understand any of these. Kaley wearing a capelet but open-toe shoes feels very early 2000s bridal in Aspen. Love Kate Winslet and Keri Russell but I really, really dislike both of these looks.
Chocolate Cherry

Definitely not a shade we see a lot of but I think I like Quinta Brunson’s look the best on the right. And how does Salma Hayek not age??

Gloves

I’m not sure I’m into this. Some of them still rocked their jewels but just did it on top of the gloves. I definitely don’t like it with Kerry Washington’s dress or Ali Wong’s dress. Kerry Washington’s pink dress is what happens when I try and reuse tissue paper – it’s always a mess and looks crumpled and I should just suck it up and buy new tissue paper. And Ali Wong is that other gift packaging crinkle paper that seems like a great idea at the time but then suddenly it’s everywhere, like even a year later. Bottom linke I think it works best back to black so I would pick one of the strapless black velvet looks if it’s going to be a thing. I definitely dislike it on Arianna Grande but I am guilty of doing this at my own wedding. I have no idea why but it was 2001.

Their gloves, and mine, have also confused Lady Grace.

Old Hollywood

I do love a Hollywood glamour throwback but the vintage dress on Arianna was one of my least favorite looks of the night. Love seeing Emma in red and I’m curious to know if the Mia Farrow inspired cut is for a new role. Selena looked lovely (that necklace!!) but it was hard to get a good photo of her, she just looked out of it in every picture. Maybe because she was with her fiance who just looks out of touch with grooming in every photo (sorry, that was horrible but I know you are all thinking it).
It’s Giving…
I don’t like either of these. One gives fish gill vibes and the other gives a nod back to The Vagina Monologues series.

90’s Mall Rats

One of these ladies went to Forenza and one went to Wet Seal, they must have found one of the few malls still left in America. Both should have stayed home until they realize it wasn’t 1997.
My Favorites
It was a 3 way tie for me this year, each time I tried to pick one I would look at the others and go the other way. So they looked the best to me.

That hair. That Dress. That back. She was walking platinum. So elegant. I’m guessing they used a whole lot of sticky tape.

I think I gasped out loud at this one. Even Lady Grace looked intrigued. The only fix was I maybe would have put her hair up. If I had her cheekbones and face I would show that all off. She looks like a tulip gilded in champagne.

So chic and so elegant. Zoe continues to wow us with these classic sheath sillouhette
The Stylist Fix
Just a disclaimer, these are just my opinions and are completely subjective. But fashion, art and beauty are all in the eye of the beholder.
Beyond the Pale

Beautiful actresses but I do not like the neutral shades on these women. So let’s mix up. Let’s give Kristen an injection of color and let down her hair. And please be kind, I am not using Artificial Intelligence (I honestly don’t really know how yet) so this is my own rudimental editing. And let’s take Elle Fanning and turn the dress black and add back a belt but in a gold.

Let’s Switch

If you remember earlier I said this lovely navy dress just didn’t seem to be Kate’s typical style. So then I saw Leighton Meester and I thought this color was so off on her but it also immediately gave me “How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days” vibes. So I decided to do a swap and I think it worked. I love the navy on Leighton so much and it warms her up, and Kate can pull off that shade. I even still like Kate’s necklace still with the yellow as it further reminds me of her famous movie moment.

Both of these dresses have a similar style because they are both by designer Georges Chakra. I’m not a huge fan of the optical illusion look of this striped fabric but I think Sofia could pull it off better than Sharon. Plus Sofia has done this type of look many times before. And I think Sharon would look stunning in the black.

Sometimes I don’t know what it is exactly that isn’t clicking for me. Zoe’s dress is one of those things that I should love on her but I don’t. I think the high fashion structured look of Cynthia’s dress would better compliment her and I think the sleek sequins would be a stunning silhouette on Cynthia.

Bring Back Angelina

Angelina is known as one of the most beautiful women in the world, and I know she now identifies more as a humanitarian then the actress that wore her husbands blood in a vial around her neck, but I’d like to see a little more rock and roll and little less Mother Teresa. So let’s do a little try on session. I’d love to see her in this teal halter look or the gold but the black velvet feels most like her old self.

Quick Fixes

Heidi Klum has a figure that is always amazing. But she always wants to show us so much of it and I would like this dress better if it was filled in.

I first saw the top of this dress and thought is was beautiful. Then I saw the bottom and was like Why? This would be so pretty as a peplum sheath dress. Why all the extra mesh?
And last, but certainly not and never least, is Zendaya. This will be somewhat controversial as she is topping most of the best dressed lists and she generally rules the red carpet. I love everything about her look – hair, jewels, cut and fit of the dress – BUT I would adjust the color.

So please let me know your thoughts! I could seriously talk about this stuff all day. Tell me who you liked, who you didn’t, and what shows I am missing that I have to watch. I just finished Shrinking, Missing You on Netflix, and I need to get back to The Diplomat but I cannot remember the ending of last season. Happy New Year to you and thank you for reading!
Suzie Gaffney
By the way my dress was from David’s Bridal and while the gloves are questionable the groom and the dress are still my favs.
